SA: Dolphin attacks prompt call for increased policing

A leading researcher says crimes such as the stabbing of two baby dolphins in an Adelaideriver can only be prevented with increased policing.

Australian Dolphin Research Foundation marine biologist MIKE BOSSLEY says he's almostcertain the attacks, discovered yesterday, were deliberate.

Wounds on the five-month old dolphins showed they were stabbed with a four-pronged fishing spear.

Dr BOSSLEY says he assumes the culprit was fishing and decided to spear a dolphin as well.

Premier MIKE RANN has questioned the intelligence of those behind the attack.

Dr BOSSLEY says the calves are recovering from the wounds, which are believed to havebeen sustained up to three weeks ago.

But he says there have been many other attacks, sometimes fatal, on the Port River dolphins.

The Labor Party promised before its election this year to increase financial penaltieson those who attack dolphins.

It's also announced plans to establish a sanctuary by the end of this year.

But Dr BOSSLEY says increased patrolling of the river is needed.
