NSW: Chikarovski releases shame file
A shame file of New South Wales MPs who voted against laws to keep convicted killer
ALLAN BAKER behind bars has been released by the state opposition.
The Liberals last night narrowly lost their bid to push the legislation, which would
have denied BAKER a review of his sentence, through the upper house.
Opposition Leader KERRY CHIKAROVSKI has today named the crossbenchers who effectively
blocked the legislation, saying they should be ashamed of themselves.
One of the voters, Greens MP LEE RHIANNON, has retaliated, calling Mrs CHIKAROVSKI'S
continued push on the issue a crude attempt to boost herself in the polls.
Ms RHIANNON says voting against the bill is about keeping the appropriate separation
of powers and allowing the courts to decide BAKER'S fate.
Premier BOB CARR says allowing the legislation through parliament could have made the
situation even worse by sparking a High Court challenge.
BAKER and KEVIN CRUMP were jailed in 1974 for life for the murder of ALAN LAMB and
conspiracy to murder VIRGINIA MORSE.
The judge recommended their files be marked NEVER TO BE RELEASED but CRUMP has already
had his sentence redetermined and can apply for parole in 2003.
