Fed: Tertiary qualifications enhance job hopes - surveys

More evidence has emerged that a tertiary qualification enhances job prospects.

Studies by the Australian Council for Educational Research show that among tertiary
graduates only six per cent are unemployed in their seventh year outside the workforce.

For young people without a tertiary qualification, the equivalent figure is 17 per cent.

The council assessed responses from a sample of 2,168 young Australians in their first
seven years after leaving school.

One report tracked the progress of Year 10 students who did not obtain a university
degree or TAFE diploma, while the other followed Year 10 students who obtained a qualification.

Spokesman PHILLIP MCKENZIE says tertiary qualifications help protect young people from
difficulties in making the transition to work.
