Fed: Murray Marathon gets under way
YARRAWONGA, Victoria, Dec 27 AAP - Paddlers from Australia and overseas took to theMurray River today to compete in the world's longest canoe race.
About 1,000 paddlers were expected to participate in the event, which began at thenorthern Victorian town of Yarrawonga this morning.
Their aim was to reach Swan Hill, 404km down river, within five days.
The Red Cross-Herald Sun Murray Marathon fundraiser is in its 34th year.
The race attracted school students and families, as well as elite athletes from aroundthe world including Sweden and Ukraine this year.
The marathon finishes at Swan Hill on New Year's Eve.
