Fed: pollies' super a serious issue to public - Latham

Opposition Leader MARK LATHAM has rejected claims the parliamentary superannuation
issue is a diversion, saying it's been an issue of concern for years.

Mr HOWARD announced yesterday he'll close down the generous parliamentary superannuation
scheme for new MPs and senators in line with a policy first put by Mr LATHAM.

Mr HOWARD's denied he's caving in to Labor, saying he made the decision so the issue
didn't become a distraction.

But Mr LATHAM's told ABC radio says it's no diversion, but a long-running concern for
many Australians who have lost trust and confidence in democracy.

Mr LATHAM says he'll push ahead with plans to include judges under the changes, a move
rejected by Mr HOWARD.
